#FTHEFAIRYTALES

JANUARY - MARCH 2021

This flash making project took place in the months leading up to International Women’s Day 2021. NOE was joined by participants from Stratford Circus, Goldsmiths University, 20 Stories High, POW! & Sampad Arts, three Associate artists and 5 commissioned artists as we used creativity to stand with those locked up.

We delivered a fun and creative workshop whilst also enabling and encouraging a very productive and interesting conversation regarding oppression, contributing to the online flash making. Lauren, Goldsmiths

ABOUT

#FtheFairytales was a digital participatory takeover for International Women’s Day 2021.

Together, women, girls and non-binary individuals & groups returned to memories of fairytale & mythical characters who were locked up in their narratives, as we explore Pop culture & our personal stories of oppression. This wasn’t therapy, it’s was a chance to own our stories and reclaim characters we loved as we protest for a women, girl or non-binary person locked up today.

Thank you also for this experience because had it not been for the workshop this confidence and drive to post and get back into the motion of creating wouldn’t have happened.

I felt the topic and framework helped me expand my creative practise in general (I have never used photography before). Ellie, Artist

Everyone (yes, including supporting men) joined as we collectively took on FLASH-MAKING, Using anything (and everything!) we had at home. The HOW TO pack inspired artists and audiences to create performance protest art from lockdown, made by Soofiya.

Even though the project is finished (for now) it is STILL well worth a read, We have loads of examples of causes & amazing organisations doing brilliant work around the country (and beyond) to inspire your piece and help define who you might protest for. Whatever your experience, whatever cause you choose, we stand side by side in giving creativity a go as we shout loudly for equality.

My reel on my profile to date has had 1320 views, 73 likes and 13 comments which is a brilliant amount of engagement. It gave me the confidence to step outside my comfort zone when making original content, and I can see the creative tools working when trying to get a larger audience to engage with these topics. Millie Wood-Downie, Artist

It was so powerful to take part in the flash mob. Taking the photos and holding the names of real women who have been and are being oppressed daily drew my attention to the fact that we grow up with prison, oppression, “women trapped in towers” and the “damsel in distress” as the norm.
